Formlabs - Form 2

Formlabs - Form 2

The Formlabs Form 2 3D printer prints even bigger and better than the best-selling predecessor Form 1+. Formlabs 3D printers take best-in-class stereolithographic 3D printing to a new level. Print your 3D models more reliably with superior quality and faster speed. Form 2 is based on the 3D print technology stereolithograhy (SLA) – which is a light-based process. The 3D printer creates objects by curing resin, layer by layer, with a directed laser beam. SLA is the industry standard in delivering beautiful, functional parts that plastic extrusion printers just can't match. Form 2 can create objects with layers as thin as 0.025 mm (25 microns), providing you with extremely high resolution 3D prints.

Some of the improvements over its predecessor Form 1+ is that Form 2 offers a larger build volume (145 × 145 × 175 mm / 3.68 liters), touchscreen and an automated resin fill system.

Smart resin cartridges

The liquid plastic resin cartridges for the Formlabs Form 2 carry a unique chip that automatically tells the 3D printer what type of plastic being used. This eliminates mixing up plastics and settings by mistake. The chips do not keep track of the amounts of resin remaining in every cartridge. Instead the machine has a built-in sensor that tells the level of resin in the tank. If the level is too low it automatically fills it with new resin from the cartridge.

Hot-swap cartridges

You can change cartridges during 3D printing. There is plenty of time to swap from an empty cartridge to a filled one before the resin in the tank is out. Cartridges can also be refilled with the same type of resin as the original.

Experiment in Open Mode

Open Mode allows experimentation with third-party resins on a Form 2 printer. When Open Mode is enabled, the Form 2 deactivates the heater, the wiper, resin dispensing, and the sensory systems that recognize the resin cartridge and resin tank. Open Mode requires manually resin filling. Learn more about Open Mode here.
